Work: Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman): Overture

An impressive new work by Paul Stanhope, Mahāsāgar (the Indian Ocean) is well sung and played by the WASO choir and orchestra with soloists Sara Macliver and Andrew Goodwin, alongside some oceanic favourites

Yannick Nézet-Séguin led a blazing performance of Bluebeard's Castle, although interpretations of Wagner and Debussy sounded tired and under-rehearsed. 

Overture, concerto, symphony: nothing to scare the horses here, nor in works by three major composers, Wagner, Mozart and Beethoven. Nothing world-shaking either in solid but often one-dimensional performances.
