At the beginning of an unresolved quest, there was a promised land, a chosen people, a pierced side and a chalice filled to the brim. There was a woman, Mary Magdalene. There was a man, Joseph of Arimathea. There was also a host of human beings, and with them a multitude of stories. Graals (Grails) plunges us into this polyphony, in search of a story suspended in the limbo of our memory. Where the living, slaves to their own tragedies, rush into the labyrinth of Christian myths and pagan legends that weave together to become the journey of the Grail. Where the peoples scattered across the Mediterranean up to the ends of Europe have each in turn made these stories their own. Where the hope of love answers the irrepressible violence of men.
This original creation combining musical theatre and opera, supported by La Cité Bleue and the Grand Théâtre, brings together four opera singers and three exceptional actors.
Together, they traverse an original story imagined by Luc Birraux which creates a dialogue between the music of Henry Purcell’s King Arthur and a new work for baroque ensemble and live electronics by young Swiss composer Kevin Juillerat.
