Orlando is a profound Baroque opera that delves into the complexities of love, jealousy, and madness. Composed in 1732 and based on Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso, the opera tells the story of a medieval knight, Orlando, who falls deeply in love with the beautiful Angelica. When Angelica reciprocates the affections of Medoro, Orlando is consumed by despair, leading to a temporary madness that challenges his honour and reason. Handel’s music masterfully captures Orlando’s emotional turmoil, with arias like the renowned “Verdi prati” conveying deep anguish and longing. The opera also explores Angelica’s internal conflict between love and duty, adding layers of complexity to the narrative. Under the baton of Marc Minkowski, Les Musiciens du Louvre bring this rich score to life, featuring a distinguished cast including Aude Extremo as Orlando and Ana Maria Labin as Angelica.
