Semiramide is a grand bel canto opera renowned for its exuberant music and dramatic complexities. Premiered in 1823 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the opera is based on Voltaire’s tragedy Sémiramis and features a libretto by Gaetano Rossi. The plot revolves around the Queen of Babylon, Semiramide, who is entangled in a web of revenge and secrets following the mysterious death of her husband, King Nino. Unbeknownst to her, the hero Assur, whom she falls in love with, is the son of her murdered husband. The opera showcases Rossini's characteristic brilliance, blending moments of great dramatic intensity with richly challenging arias and ensembles. Semiramide's aria “Bel raggio lusinghier” is particularly emblematic, reflecting her inner struggle between love and duty.
