Domenico Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater is a unique, virtuosic work for ten solo voices and basso continuo, which the composer wrote whilst serving as maestro di cappella at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
In this programme, Voces Suaves combines Scarlatti’s moving polyphonic masterpiece with sensitively composed prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary by Alessandro Melani, a Roman composer who is largely unknown today. The entire selection of these beautiful Baroque pieces from Rome revolves around the complex figure of the Virgin Mary.
