Courage and wit shape this gem of the buffo genre. Donizetti challenged his librettist Felice Romani: “You have one week; I must compose the score in two. Let’s see who’s braver.” In L’elisir d’amore, the love potion is merely wine, yet the opera cleverly plays with romantic tropes. The real magic lies in sincerity, not sorcery—as Nemorino wins Adina’s heart through his genuine affection.

A bel canto favourite, this comic masterpiece features sopranos Pretty Yende, Serena Sáenz, and Marina Monzó as Adina, opposite tenors Javier Camarena, Michael Spyres (in role debut), and Filipe Manu as the shy Nemorino. Diego Matheuz returns to conduct, with Huw Montague-Rendall and Carles Pachon as Belcore, and Ambrogio Maestri, Fabio Capitanucci, and Simon Orfila as the charismatic Dulcamara.

Mario Gas’s acclaimed production sets the opera in Fascist-era Italy, blending humour with poetic depth in a timeless, emotionally rich staging.
