Songs of farewell: Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig end their Residency with Strauss, Mozart, darkness and light.

Mozart wrote his Clarinet Concerto in his last days; Strauss’sMetamorphosen is an old man’s lament for a civilisation shattered by war. Clarinettist Martin Fröst brings out Mozart’s sweetness and shadows, in a concert that begins with a vision of eternity and ends in laughter.

It’s a superbly-devised programme – and the journey from the early Tod und Verklärung to the haunted Metamorphosen will show Chailly’s relationship with his Leipzig players at its most personal. Strauss’s late masterpiece distantly evokes the world of Mozart, but it’s fitting that their Residency comes to an end with Till Eulenspiegel – Strauss’s eternally youthful controlled explosion of colour, irreverence and fun.
