Elgar often spoke of a cryptic meaning to some of his works, and at the head of his Second Symphony he tantalises us with a literary clue from poet Percy Shelley: ‘Rarely, rarely, comest thou Spirit of Delight’. Before this, the influences of Mozart and Haydn can be heard in Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto, performed by star pianist Martin Helmchen.
