Magdalena Kožená heads a terrific cast in the Venice Baroque Orchestra’s performance of Vivaldi’s gloriously theatrical Juditha Triumphans.
‘Hail Judith, beautiful and undefeated!’ – but even if 2016 wasn’t the 275th anniversary of Vivaldi’s death, no excuses are needed to enjoy the splendours of Vivaldi’s best-loved oratorio. Magdalena Kožená is the warlike heroine, and the Venice Baroque Orchestra has this music in its blood.
That’s to be expected: since being founded by harpsichordist Andrea Marcon in 1997, this period-instrument ensemble has become famous for the energy and bite it brings to the music of its native city. The New York Times loved its ’fresh sound and rhythmic exuberance’ and there’s no better showcase for those qualities than Vivaldi’s triumphant celebration of sex, death and boundless glory.
