Stravinsky’s wit, Mendelssohn’s melodic genius, and Tchaikovsky’s brilliant orchestration are all showcased in this concert. Stravinsky’s Suite No. 2, based on piano duets he wrote for young musicians, charms with its lean orchestration and energized rhythms. The solo part of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is thrilling, delighting with its heart-melting melodies. Powerfully expressive, picturesque, and superbly orchestrated, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, “Winter Daydreams,” already exhibits the talents that made him one of music’s greatest symphonists.
