Tchaikovsky has a well-earned reputation as one of the great masters of orchestral writing, with graceful melodies and sumptuous harmonies oozing romance and drama. His three works performed in this concert portray different elements of Tchaikovsky’s style, from wistful and melancholic to luscious and intense.
Opening the concert will be Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, which has a certain youthful charm while also portraying his developing musical maturity. Ending the concert in style will be Dvořák’s cheerful and lyrical Symphony No.8.
