One of America’s finest orchestras, San Diego Symphony, makes its National Concert Hall debut led by the charismatic Rafael Payare, acclaimed for his profound musician-ship, technical brilliance and high-energy performances. Together they bring a showcase of orchestral colour and virtuosity to Irish audiences.

Gabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari, premiered by Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2024, draws on the composer’s Mexican heritage and spirituality in a piece that unfolds from mystery into radiant celebration. Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto follows, a work of gripping intensity and depth of feeling, featuring the renowned Greek violinist and multi-Grammy nominee, Leonidas Kavakos as soloist.

Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, in which he reworked some of the musical’s most dance-focused dramatic moments into a single piece, brings electrifying energy and flair. That dynamism is matched by Stravinsky’s dazzling The Firebird Suite, an orchestral masterpiece derived from his 1910 ballet score, celebrated for its “vivid orchestration” and “energetic music”.

A compelling showcase of brilliance and expressive orchestral power in a landmark debut from the San Diego Symphony with Rafael Payare.
