Shostakovich’s Fifth and Sibelius' Violin Concerto: defiance and wonder from conductor Gemma New and violinist Christian Tetzlaff.

“A Soviet artist’s response to just criticism” was how Shostakovich described his Fifth Symphony – but then, in Stalin’s Russia, he didn’t have much choice. Music never lies, though, and today this epic, defiant masterpiece is just part of a concert that opens with a Polish thriller and stars the phenomenal Christian Tetzlaff in the fire and ice of Sibelius' Violin Concerto.
