Vienna adores its composers – especially once they are dead. Mozart was buried at 35 in a common grave, owing money across town; today his portrait sells chocolates. Schubert, the city's only true native among the greats, died at 31 having never had a home of his own, and many of his finest works lay unperformed for decades. Beethoven drew twenty thousand mourners to his funeral, yet his late quartets were dismissed as the ravings of a deaf madman. Mahler converted to Catholicism to win the directorship of the Court Opera, and the press hounded him regardless.
In this intimate salon evening, pianist Pavel Timofeyevsky and soprano Iuno Connolly tell the story of the city that made its composers and nearly broke them. The programme runs from Mozart's sunlit F major Sonata, K332, to the brooding young Brahms of the Op.10 Ballades, with a selection of Schubert's songs at its heart. It is performed on a grand piano in a private Chelsea home.
Guests arrive from 18:15 for a sparkling reception with Viennese canapés, before the concert begins at 19:00. Homemade strudel is served.
Pavel Timofeyevsky is Artistic Director of Notable and Musical Director of Devon Opera. He is known for concerts that pair performance with storytelling, bringing the lives behind the music into the room. [Iuno Connolly: one line of credentials]
The Soirée is a prelude to Notable's Musical Travels to Vienna (19–22 November 2026).
