| Behzod Abduraimov | Klavier |
One of today’s brightest piano stars shines in music that overflows with character and colour, culminating in the fairground thrills of Stravinsky’s Petrushka.
Behzod Abduraimov offers a recital that shows off the piano’s magnificent potential for colour, range and virtuosity.
He begins with Brahms’ final set of piano pieces, Op.119, introspective, humorous and rugged by turns.
Liszt’s formidable evocation of heaven and hell in his sonata-fantasia Après un lecture de Dante (After reading Dante) is preceded by a set of enchanting Variations on a Theme by Rode, by Liszt’s teacher, Carl Czerny.
After the interval, Debussy’s Suite bergamasque finds the French composer evoking the graceful world of Watteau’s art, centring on the famous ‘Clair de lune’.
The concert culminates in Three Movements from Petrushka in Stravinsky’s own piano arrangement. His ballet music conjures up fairground atmospheres populated by a wealth of contrasting characters and powered by the irresistible rhythms of folk dance.
