L’Auditori is once again demonstrating its commitment to Catalonia’s musician with the premiere of a Mariona Vila work featuring a choral ensemble as part of the “Canta amb l’OBC” project, and a performance of Enric Casals’s Cello Concerto. Created in 1949, it explicitly reflects – with a touch of irony – his desire to carry on the legacy of European Romanticism. Highlights include the undisputed prominence of the solo part – Mariona Camats on the cello – as well as the narrative density of the orchestra, with which she will interact.

Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra, a symphonic poem inspired by the work of the same name by Nietzsche and premiered in 1896, will be performed in the second part of the concert. Beyond its iconic beginning, the work shapes a vast acoustic fresco about knowledge, nature and human beings, with a wordless orchestration that exemplifies the ambition and limits of human creativity – including the symphony genre – in the late 19th century, with avant-garde aesthetic changes not far away.
