One of the most popular violin concertos of all is enveloped in a tapestry of orchestral colour in Tawain’s flagship ensemble’s second visit.

At its conclusion is perhaps the best-loved ballet score since Tchaikovsky. Most will be familiar with Prokofiev’s Dance of the Knights, but his mighty score to Shakespeare’s tragedy contains a wealth of music with similarly dramatic impact. More a selection of scenes than a tour of the story, there are nevertheless moments of shattering drama, mercurial wit and deep-seated emotion.

Debussy’s gorgeous Suite, originally for piano, is the source of perhaps his most famous melody, Clair de lune.

The Taiwanese complete their programme with a native composer: Tao of Meinong celebrates the Hakkas – the ethnic group from whom most Taiwanese derive their ancestry – in gently mesmeric patterns and impressionist washes of sound.
