A Child of our Time was Tippett’s response to Kristallnacht, a Nazi pogrom against German Jews. In a unique, utterly touching musical language his oratorio explores the darkness of the world and of individuals. A powerful collective spirit is forged in the famous spirituals.
200 years since its UK premiere in March 1825, we celebrate Beethoven’s huge, influential Ninth Symphony, commissioned by the Philharmonic Society of London. The symphony’s journey is hesitant, stormy and soulful until the final movement welcomes in the human voice – and a hope for the future.
