Marking the 150th anniversary of Debussy’s birth,
Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts this masterpiece
of atmospheric suggestion, insinuating eroticism
and doomed love, having recently performed it
at Paris’s Opéra Comique, the theatre in which
it was premiered. Although first performed at
the Proms 36 years ago,
this landmark opera has
never before been heard
here with instruments of
the period. Phillip Addis
and Karen Vourc’h
reprise their much praised,
fresh-voiced
partnership in the
title roles.
