Kodály was an indefatigable collector of folk songs and dances from all over Eastern Europe. His sequence of dances from the region of Galánta in present day Slovakia is colourful and beautifully orchestrated. Rachmaninov’s first piano concerto is an attractive, rhapsodic work which the composer revised in later life without sacrificing its youthful freshness. Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony was written at his house in the depths of rural Bohemia and is imbued with the spirit of Czech folksong and the countryside.
