Hanna-Elisabeth Müller joined the visiting Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin for Mahler's Fourth Symphony and Unsuk Chin's surprising Puzzles and Games, derived from her opera Alice in Wonderland.

Closing the 26th edition of the Ultraschall Berlin festival, André de Ridden and the DSO prove the vitality of the contemporary orchestra with a programme featuring works by Streich, Chin and Andre.

Now entering his second season as Chief Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, Robin Ticciati is keen to show the breadth of his repertoire and the extent of the orchestra’s abilities. 

Attentive to the dynamics and tempi, Frang meshed her violin with the orchestra, naturally coming into the footlights or receding into an accompanying role when required. In effect, the performance had a feel of an improvisation.

Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s music was the starting point for this year’s Ultraschall Festival, marking what would have been his 100th birthday.

A few nights after the Berliner Philharmoniker brought us Janáček’s late masterpiece, the Glagolitic Mass, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and conductor Tugan Sokhiev took the stage with his other great work from the same year, 1926: the Sinfonietta, Op. 60, which originally appeared with the modifier “Military”.
