Baráti and Würtz quickly showed their adeptness turning Beethoven’s quick lines into easy gestures. Together, they understand the meaning of the phrase, the weight of good articulation, and the importance of the space between notes.

The Bard met with boisterous performances in the LPO's latest instalment of Shakespeare400, but Khachaturian's Violin Concerto emerged with much subtlety.

Mischa Maisky, the de-facto romantic cellist, gave the Istanbul audience a triple treat of passionate cello playing in Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Bruch, but surprisingly enough he was in most uninhibited during the Haydn concerto.Mr Maisky’s vibrato is excessive, a trait inherited from his longtime teacher and mentor Gregor Piatigorsky, but it never gets in the way of music.

Die mehr als fünfminütige Kadenz spielte Kristóf Baráti mit schwingender Agogik, selbst in kräftigen Akzenten immer sonor, sauber im Klang und glockenrein – Ausdruck, nicht Eindruck oder extrovertierte Virtuosität.
