A chamber programme of Shostakovich’s private idioms and public masks

Alina Ibragimova and friends join forces at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in two powerful chamber works composed at the height of the Second World War. 

The final event of the Ragged School Museum Festival saw a programme of Brahms and Shostakovich in the wonderful Victorian museum, tucked away at the heart of the East End.

Opening their season with an all-Russian programme, Royal Northern Sinfonia ventured beyond the standard chamber orchestra repertoire, with patchy results.

Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances were a treat and Simon Trpčeski was characteristically glistening in Shostakovich, but the surprise package turned out to be a rarely heard work by Kabeláč.

Ravel, Mendelssohn and youthful Shostakovich form a varied programme for this starry trio. 

Youthful Mahler, earth-shattering Shostatovich and life-affirming Schumann, played by The Maisky Trio and Maxim Rysanov at the Istanbul Music Festival.

Three musicians at the top of their game – Martha Argerich, Janine Jansen and Misha Maisky – collaborated in a celebration of the joy of music-making that teased, astonished and ultimately stirred the emotions.

James Ehnes, Steven Osborne and Alban Gerhardt captured the lamentations of Shostakovich's Second Piano Trio before they were joined by clarinettist Jean Johnson for Messiaen's quartet at St John’s Smith Square.

The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio presented superb performances of the seminal piano trios of Brahms and Shostakovich, prefaced by a newly commissioned work from Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.

After a lively appetizer of Stravinsky, the main course of Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky piano trios fail to impress at Wigmore Hall. 

The penultimate concert for the 2014 season featured new choreography for Tan's ritualistic work, as well as a brilliant performances of percussion works and Shostakovich's second Piano Trio.

The fascinating Rest is Noise festival at Southbank Centre has now reached its mid-point, with the focus on music created out of oppression and war.

The scheduled programme had included Trios by Debussy and Chaminade, and I’d done my homework so that at least I’d have some idea about what was what. But very unfortunately the Fiorini Trio had had to cancel at very short notice - so it was extraordinary that the concert took place at all, thanks to the London Mozart Trio standing in.

For the second concert of its 2011-12 series, the Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth featured pianist Di Wu and flutist Nadine Asin in works by J.S. Bach, Max Reger, Haydn and Shostakovich. Although one work didn’t include piano (Reger) and the piano part to another was of secondary importance (Bach), Ms. Wu was billed as the primary guest artist.
