A great chamber music experience, at the end of one of music’s most challenging years.

Two contrasting works from the Nash Ensemble made for a fine evening of the very best quality chamber music at Wigmore Hall, gratefully received in the hall and by many online.

There was a palpable sense of communion during a performance bringing these great musicians together at Carnegie Hall for the first time. 

Top notch musicianship from the Schubert Ensemble in their final appearance at King’s Place. 

Joined by pianist Emanuel Ax, the Emerson Quartet performed at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival.

Traditional August Bank Holiday weather – steady rain – was reflected in the melancholy programme for this lunchtime Chamber Prom.

The five musicians on stage performed just like a well-oiled machine in Dvořák's Op. 81 Piano Quintet’s devilishly tricky coda.

Stunning Smetana and Dvořák made for a gripping end to a fine concert.

Ensemble 360 present Dvořák, Mozart and Spohr "in the round". 

The Recontres inédites series is what makes the Verbier Festival famous among aficionados. The title translates – roughly – as “Unprecedented Meetings”, and that is certainly what the concerts represent: world-class soloists brought together on minimal but far from non-existent rehearsal time to play chamber music.

The Dallas-area series Chamber Music International presented its second program of the season this Friday and Saturday evening. (This review is of the second concert, at St Barnabas Presbyterian Church in Richardson, Texas.

In what would turn out to be a concert of two very distinct halves, the Elias Quartet impressed in the cosy confines of Wigmore Hall. After a full ‘daily grind’, arriving at this cocoon of a hall – where outside noise is absent, save for the occasional underground rumble – felt like a real treat. Here was a chance to sink into some cosy chamber music to wash over the listener – or maybe not.

I went to this concert primarily so as to be able to hear Frederick Stocken’s new work, Archangels. The performance of that work was preceded by the Choir of St Mary’s Woodford singing sixteenth century church music, conducted by Mr Stocken.
