Amid an uncertain future for the Mostly Mozart Festival, conductor Louis Langrée led a fiery program that overflowed with rage rather than grief.

The program, set long before Crumb’s death in February, following an implicit logic from Debussy to Stravinsky through Charles Ives and ending in Crumb’s somber lament, Ancient Voices of Children.

Recently recovered from emergency brain surgery, the popular conductor stepped back onto the podium with the New York Philharmonic this weekend in performances that ranged from the skilled to the sublime.
