An enjoyable Magic Flute from Irish National Opera

Anna Devin (Pamina) with Nicholas O'Neill, Sean Hughes and Oran Murphy (Three Boys) © Pat Redmond
A thoroughly satisfying, entertaining production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte from Irish National Opera. Anna Devin delivers a delightful Pamina and Nick Pritchard a convincing Tamino.

Not quite the Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall

Benjamin Appl © Uwe Arens | Sony Classical
Competent if underwhelming Handel from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Maxim Emelyanchev.

A classically elegant Così fan tutte at OHP

Sarah Tynan (Despina) and Peter Coleman-Wright (Don Alfonso) © Robert Workman
As the two sisters, Eleanor Dennis and Kitty Whately ideally complemented and blended with each other.

Monteverdi on a doughnut: Ulysses fails to thrill

The Return of Ulysses © ROH & Roundhouse | Stephen Cummiskey
A series of ill-advised staging choices leads to a disappointingly drab performance of Monteverdi's Homeric epic.

Grange Festival delivers an engaging Mansfield Park by Jonathan Dove

Shelley Jackson (Mary Crawford), Henry Neill (Edmund Bertram) and Martha Jones (Fanny Price) © Robert Workman
A newly-orchestrated version of Jonathan Dove’s chamber opera drew some impressive performances from Heritage Opera in this pared-down adaption of Jane Austen’s third novel.
