Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov still reign over The Kingdom of Sweet as The Nutcracker returns to Covent Garden for a marathon run of performances over the Christmas season. 

This wonderful ballet has never looked better at The Royal, especially in the remarkable performance of Natalia Osipova.

On the evidence of this performance, there is every reason to be cheerful.

A return of the company's signature work found The Royal Ballet fielding an excellent cast led by Sarah Lamb and Vadim Muntagirov. 

Dressed in black dance clothes, he stood still front of stage, bathed in a bright spotlight as the Royal Albert Hall erupted with a standing ovation. 

The Royal Ballet's Giselle is classical ballet at its best, paying deep reverence to the original with some of the heavier elements refreshed. Excellently performed by Sarah Lamb and Matthew Golding. 

Many ballet fans do not find galas particularly enjoyable. We can admire our favourite dancers performing acrobatic solos, numerous fouettés and famous variations, but little space is left for the dancers to lose themselves in the roles they are playing, not to mention the limitations in terms of scenography and lighting.'Carlos Acosta – A Classical Selection' is a nice exception.

This charismatic Cuban is probably the only big dance name who could compete successfully with the Bolshoi Ballet now here in London. But then, for many years, Carlos Acosta has continuously shown persuasive pluck and daredevil tactics to his devoted audiences, many of whom are supporting him in his latest summer season programme at the Coliseum this week.

Christmas must be nearing when that traditional fare of sparkle, excitement and the surging score of The Nutcracker bursts in full flood onto the world’s ballet stages. Originally created in 1891 by Marius Petipa for the Mariinsky Theatre, the ballet has become the annual bread-winner for most companies (albeit in various versions), guaranteeing full houses and happy customers.

The penultimate programme of The Royal Ballet’s season takes the audience on a journey, from a joyous celebration with seven imperially dressed ballerinas, to a summer dacha filled with tense emotions, and finally back in time to the ceremonial rites of a Russian peasant wedding.
