Andrea Battistoni conducts the Tokyo Philharmonic in Tchaikovsky's three Shakespeare-inspired works in a single programme. In between, cellist Haruma Sato excels in the original version of the Rococo Variations.

The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder gave superb performances of Tchaikovsky's Hamlet and, with Benjamin Grosvenor, Liszt's Piano Concerto no 1. Their Beethoven Pastoral Symphony was disappointing in contrast.

A belated touch of demonic fire was a welcome ingredient to last night's Prom with a compelling interpretation of Prokofiev's Third Symphony, based on material from his opera The Fiery Angel.
