Cinderella undergoes psychoanalysis on the Sussex Downs as Fiona Shaw's production is revived for the Glyndebourne Festival. 

In her anxiety to be ‘new’, Shaw slaps a sackload of semi-comprehensible ideas onto a sort-of present day update.

Laurent Pelly’s staging provided some of the most memorable moments in this performance of Cendrillon. 

Over the years, I’ve generally found performances at Royal Academy Opera to be enjoyable and straightforward. This production of Cendrillon went rather beyond that.

I once heard a lecture by Gérard Mortier, then head of the Paris Opera, contrasting the twin operatic traditions starting from Monteverdi's serious and affecting dramma per musica and the lavish court entertainments of Lully. A couple of centuries on, there's no need to ask the side of the fence on which Massenet's Cendrillon falls.

La production vaut le détour essentiellement pour ses deux remarquables interprètes principales, Ruzan Mantashyan et Ambroisine Bré. Le reste peine à se porter à la hauteur de l'œuvre de Massenet.

Malgré un aspect véritablement enchanteur, la mise en scène de Mariame Clément ne convainc pas toujours, comme la distribution. Heureusement, l'orchestre dirigé par Keri-Lynn Wilson vient au secours du plateau.

La metteuse en scène Mariame Clément s'attaque à l'opéra de Massenet avec plus ou moins de bonheur, dans une production qui ne manque pas de ressources musicales.
