At Berlin's Philharmonie, Gustavo Dudamel takes the audience on an adventurous journey around the Americas with works by Ortiz, Ginastera and Ives.

Adjectives that come to mind for your typical summer concert: fun, friendly, safe. Would any of those have fit last night’s Hollywood Bowl program? “Fun” absolutely works; maybe “friendly”. But “safe”? The centerpiece of the program – Alberto Ginastera’s wild Piano Concerto no. 1 – was anything but that. Try “daring”. Or even “dangerous”.

Es importante que se programe música mexicana y latinoamericana. Nosotros mismos conocemos poco nuestro repertorio y sólo incluyéndolo regularmente en las temporadas de conciertos podremos darle vida y acercarnos a él, y eso además propicia una sana diversidad musical. En este concierto la OFUNAM contribuyó a ese propósito.

En musique comme dans tout langage, un certain tropisme opère, avec son lot de lieux communs rassurants. On attend d’une formation américaine une certaine fraîcheur, et d’un chef vénézuélien, une chaleur trop souvent absente sous un climat tempéré. Il n’y a pas eu tromperie sur la marchandise. Gustavo Dudamel et le Los Angeles Philharmonic nous ont offert tout cela.
