“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal”—but who are “we”? In this wide-ranging program—Carnegie Hall’s first by Jarrett Ott, an acclaimed baritone who makes his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2025—each piece of music becomes a question posed to history and a nation of unreconciled ideals. Alongside BBC New Generation Artist Kunal Lahiry—and through songs by Adolphus Hailstork, Jake Heggie, Bonds, Judith Weir, Schubert, Ravel, and more—Ott’s program explores “the voices of those silenced or excluded: enslaved people, Indigenous communities, immigrants, women, queer and trans individuals, and the millions still fighting systemic oppression.”
