Tradition and modernism merged in the German Lied around the turn of the 20th Century, brought together here by Marlis Petersen and her regular duo partner Stephan Matthias Lademann in an exquisite sequence of songs and ‘simple tunes’. The German soprano, who recently received rave reviews for her performance as the perpetually young Emilia Marty in Janáček’s The Makropulos Affair with the LSO and Sir Simon Rattle, brings her multihued tone and profound emotional intelligence to music of gentle beauty and grace.
