Kazuki Yamada continues his cycle of Mahler symphonies with No. 2, known as the ‘Resurrection’. It is epic in all senses: some 90 minutes long, with an immense orchestra, plus organ, choir, and soloists. The first movement is Mahler’s attempt to answer the Big Questions: ‘“Why have you lived? Why have you suffered? Is it all some huge, awful joke? ’ By the end, expect to be uplifted and transformed as the choir sings for the first time, and the solo voices soar angelically above. Eleanor Lyons and Jess Dandy are renowned for their lyrical interpretations of Mahler’s music, while the CBSO Chorus celebrates its 1000th performance of this monumental work. Not to be missed.
