Powerful, hypnotizing and colourful. That is how The New York Times describes the characterful Gurdjieff Ensemble, a group that breathes new life into the music of Armenia. What makes the ensemble so unique are the exceptional, authentic instruments from Armenia and its surrounding regions. Together, these instruments create a rich and vibrant sound palette that is rarely encountered on the live stage in this part of the world.
In Gorani, ancient rhythms centred around the mourning song of the same name take centre stage. Originally, these sounds accompanied a ritual of dancing backwards; in music, this translates into a powerful sense of resistance to loss and an intense shared experience. Following previous acclaimed performances (including the 2015 Holland Festival), the Edison-winning ensemble now returns to the Muziekgebouw.
