A group of young artists in Paris. Their friendships and dreams are shaped by love, poverty, and the hardship of everyday existence. The romance between the poet Rodolfo and Mimì unfolds alongside the lively relationships of a close-knit circle of friends. As their lives become increasingly complicated, will their love and friendship stand firm?

From its first performance in Turin in 1896, Puccini’s La bohème has conquered the operatic world. Its power lies in the combination of conversational conciseness of the exchanges between the friends, rhythmical brilliance such as in the scene of the Christmas Eve hubbub and the lyricism of the lovers in their famous arias. Opening the 2026 Riga Opera Festival, Latvian National Opera’s lavish new production combines extrovert vibrancy with touching intimacy. Latvian director LAURA has gathered around her a creative team including set, lighting and video designer Fabien Lédé, costume designer Fyodor Podgorny (one half of the fashion brand Fyodor Golan) and choreographer Elza Leimane. A 21st century take on Puccini’s chef-d'œuvre.
