Barriers between classical and popular, all too often flimsy in construction, fall away in this utterly compelling concert. Members of the Basel Chamber Orchestra and their frequent collaborator Hugo Ticciati are joined by mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital in a sequence of pieces that connect Habsburg Austria with Belle Époque France. Their programme also embraces the passionate, bittersweet musical worlds of Édith Piaf and Barbara, among the last century’s greatest chansonnières, and the pulsating sounds of Jonny Greenwood’s Proven Lands.
