Camerata Ireland & Barry Douglas Play Beethoven

Renowned Irish pianist Barry Douglas returns to the National Concert Hall with his all-island ensemble Camerata Ireland for an all-Beethoven programme that brings clarity, depth, and vitality to the music of one of classical music’s greatest composers.

Praised for his “authority and poetic insight” and described as an exhilarating “force of nature” (The Irish Times), Douglas is also “an artist who thinks the music through in his own way, leaving you thinking afresh” (The Guardian).

The programme opens with the dramatic Coriolan Overture, followed by Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto, a work that showcases the composer’s youthful brilliance, energy, and virtuosity. The evening concludes with the dazzling ‘Emperor’ Concerto, Beethoven’s final Piano Concerto. A groundbreaking work, it reimagined the concerto form by elevating the piano to a symphonic role rather than simply a melodic soloist, paving the way for later Romantic composers such as Brahms and Tchaikovsky, whose works reflect Beethoven’s bold vision.

By the time Beethoven composed this monumental work, his deafness had progressed so severely that he could no longer perform it himself. That honour fell to pianist Friedrich Schneider who premiered the work in Leipzig in 1811, where it was warmly received and remains a cornerstone of the piano repertoire today.

Founder of Camerata Ireland and winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, Barry Douglas both directs the ensemble and performs as soloist in this celebration of Beethoven’s music and enduring legacy.
