Haydn’s work, with its famed contemplative slow movement, prefaces the second of Prokofiev’s string quartets, a restless, folk-tinged composition created following Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union. The Jerusalem Quartet’s vision of Brahms’s String Quartet in C minor Op. 51 No. 1, a cornerstone of its repertoire, strikes an ideal balance between the work’s refined Classicism and its fervent expressive language.
