Utopia |
From town musician to media tycoon: Tielman Susato filled 16th-century Antwerp with song and rhythm. In his printing shop ‘Den Cromhorn’, the most beautiful polyphony rolled off the presses, including more than ninety chansons composed by Susato himself. Utopia Ensemble paints a portrait of this multi-talented man with a selection of his own work and the compositions of masters such as Josquin and Lassus, printed in Antwerp. Highlight: Salve quae roseo serto, Susato's ode to the city that gave wings to his dreams.
The Antwerp ensemble Utopia performs Renaissance vocal polyphony with refinement and depth. The five singers, specialized in early music, strive for a sound that is pure and expressive. The fascinating story of Susato was recorded by this Antwerp vocal quintet on their CD Salve Susato, which was awarded a Diapason d’Or.
