Song of the Night – Mahler 7

Few composers embody the large-scale symphonic world of Late Romanticism as powerfully as Gustav Mahler. After the Resurrection Symphony at the opening of the season, he is therefore present with a second major work.

In his Seventh Symphony, too, Mahler builds a world “with all the means of the available technique” – a world full of emotional contrasts. It begins with the lament of the tenor horn and leads through darkly romantic night music and a shadowy scherzo towards a brightly radiant finale.

This music tells of the world through march rhythms, sounds of nature, cowbells and horn romanticism. As music that awakens images in the mind, it also opens another important line of the season: vivid sound worlds that do not merely illustrate, but create spaces for the imagination.

On the podium is Daniele Rustioni, one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation. His appearance with the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester also offers a glimpse of a new generation of conductors already present on the world’s major stages.
