A recital with conversation led by Natasha Loges, exploring the staggering wealth of English song composers coming through the Royal College of Music (RCM) in the early part of the 20th Century, and the strive to find a national musical voice to match that of Germany and Austria.

Rebecca Clarke became the first woman to study composition with Charles Villiers Stanford at the RCM in 1907. Stanford’s legacy as teacher runs throughout this programme of works by eight of his pupils, including George Butterworth, destined to die while on active service in 1916, and Muriel Herbert, lifted from family poverty in Liverpool by a scholarship to study at the RCM.
