Scored for clarinet, horn, bassoon and strings, the Beethoven Septet that follows is surprisingly symphonic in character. A light-hearted work in the spirit of the 18th century serenade, the work complements the vivacity that pervades the Seventh Symphony that follows, but contrasts with its unique, chamber-orientated instrumentation.

The musicians got on a bus to their next destination as the audience left the music hall. What had happened no longer was.
