While George Enescu’s star has risen in recent decades, the exceptional quality of his string quartets often surprises those who know his music from works such as his Octet and Violin Sonatas. The Arcadia Quartet, formed in 2006 while its members were students at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca, presents its Romanian compatriot’s String Quartet No. 2 alongside Brahms’s tempestuous Op. 51 No. 1, refined over the course of 20 years to secure its enduring place in the repertoire.
