Three of the 20th century’s most glittering ballet scores, each a stunning orchestral showpiece for the New York Phil whether it be in Bartok’s gritty expressionism or Debussy’s heady sensuality. Following concert performances of these works, the programme culminates in a must-see semi-staged production of Stravinsky’s Petrushka by New York’s genre-bending production company Giants Are Small: live puppetry, dancers and visuals interact with orchestra in a carnivalesque spectacle that breaks down the boundaries between performers and audience. The New York Philharmonic becomes the fair, conductor Alan Gilbert turns magician, and Petrushka and his fellow-marionettes come startlingly to life. You may have heard Petrushka before – but you’ve certainly never seen it quite like this.
