‘Everything I have written to date can be destroyed’, Carl Orff told his publisher. ‘With Carmina Burana my collected works begin’. Bawdy yet tender, it opens a window on the medieval world with percussion-rich exuberance.
The BSO’s celebrated Chorus makes a welcome return to the Hall - conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes, a man renowned for his choral flair. First though there’s a musical tale of two cities: Berlioz’ Roman Carnival featuring music from Benvenuto Cellini whose Overture launched our season, and Elgar’s affectionate portrait of London, which he described in letters as: ‘cheerful and Londony, stout and steaky.’ The Sunday Times said: ‘Hughes is a dab hand with British music.’
Tickets: £28, £25, £22, £19, £15, under 26s £8, under 18s £1
