Polish music grandeur

The Polish Baltic Philharmonic will perform at the Baltic Sea Festival for the first time. The orchestra was founded in 1945 in Gdansk and today is a Polish national symbol of international renown. In the Berwaldhallen concert hall, by way of introduction, they will perform a beautiful Divertimento by the Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz (1909 -1969) – a leading woman composer of the modern period. The young, rising starlet Alena Baeva, will then be the soloist in Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1, which, when it was composed in 1948, conflicted with what was then considered to be politically correct and therefore was first performed seven years later. The piece has become a beloved work in repeat performances. The evening ends with the first performance in Sweden of the Polish composer Henryk Mikołaj Górecki’s (1933-2010) Symphony No. 4, Tansman Episodes.
