Chief conductor Daniele Gatti takes the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra deep into its Romantic heritage with music by Berg, Wagner and Mahler.
Few composers test an orchestra quite like Wagner, Mahler and their followers of the Second Viennese School. In this magnificent programme, Daniele Gatti shares all his sense of drama with an orchestra whose tradition in this repertoire dates back to Mahler himself.
He’ll also be inviting musicians from the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain onstage in the prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg: creating orchestral sound of a richness and splendour that would have had Wagner himself swooning. It’s an inspiring gesture from a conductor who has himself just inherited a mighty tradition: which will be on full, sonorous display in the heartfelt Adagio from Mahler’s Tenth.
