Evgeny Kissin gave a performance of immense power, energy and musical intellect in Beethoven's monumental Hammerklavier and a selection of Rachmaninov Preludes.

There was depth and intensity from Steven Isserlis and Alexander Melnikov in this intriguing programme of Russian cello sonatas from old hands and new brooms.

Beethoven's mighty Hammerklavier Sonata and Schumann's Kreisleriana made for a weighty Verbier recital programme which at times felt distinctly like 'work in progress'.
