The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra’s strings present a programme of British music from the Renaissance to the present day, including works by Byrd, Britten and Tippett.

Inventiveness, joyful performance and intuitive communication from Thomas Gould and the Britten Sinfonia in recompositions from Richter, Auerbach and Tippett.

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields are back on their home turf for string orchestra works by Tippett and Walton.

Atmospheric Britten from Ben Goldscheider and Robin Tritschler, and insightful playing from the BFO under Peter Manning, with students from the Bobby Moore Academy at the evening's heart.

Alice Coote is totally mesmerising in Britten's cantata Phaedra in a concert stream from London's Southbank.

An evening of English repertoire at King's Place where the pleasures were flecked with disappointments.

In a brief mid-concert interview for BBC Radio 3, conductor Sian Edwards was asked why Britten and his contemporaries wrote so much music for small string orchestra, and her answer illuminated the choice of programming for this Proms Saturday Matinee performance.
