Stars du week-end d'ouverture de la Biennale de quatuors à cordes de la Philharmonie de Paris, les deux formations se sont illustrées séparément et ensemble dans deux concerts qui resteront dans l'histoire de la manifestation.

Renouvelés par l'arrivée de Charlotte Saluste-Bridoux (ex-membre du Quatuor Confluence), les Chiaroscuro ont livré une très belle lecture du Quatuor K.421 de Mozart avant de montrer leurs limites dans Beethoven.

In the first leg of a chronological traversal of the string quartet repertoire, the Emersons were on top form.

The programme ended with a sense of affirmation that shouted "that's how the Ravel quartet should go!"

In Zurich, the German configuration brilliantly showcased the composer’s supreme achievement in the string quartet genre.

The Wihan Quartet was formed in 1985 in Czechoslovakia. Since then they have developed an impressive international career, often visiting the UK and being broadcast on its airwaves. Among their achievements is a published recording of Dvořák’s String Quartet no. 11, and it was this recording, not their continued and celebrated presence in the UK, that first brought them to my attention.

It would be difficult indeed to imagine an evening of string quartet playing at once more diverse and more brilliant than this. Already one of the world’s finer quartets after only a few years in the public eye, the Quatuor Ebène are notable for their catholic tastes.
